Speech Intelligibility presentation: Why is speech difficult to understand in some children with Down syndrome

Wednesday, February 24, 2021 at 7 PM EST
Presented by Libby Kumin Ph.D., CCC-SLP, Professor Emeritus Loyola University Maryland, part of a three-part series sponsored by CDSPG.

Presentation is targeted for parents of children from age 4 to adulthood.
How can we help children with Down syndrome develop speech that is easier to understand? There are many factors that affect speech intelligibility in children and adults with Down syndrome but the occurrence and combination of factors are different for each person. Dr. Kumin will present a framework that can be used for identifying, analyzing, and treating the factors that affect speech intelligibility for your child, e.g. rate, articulation, oral motor skills and childhood apraxia of speech. Attendees will learn how to write IEP goals that target factors affecting speech intelligibility in your child and how to develop a home-school communication plan and to use home activities to practice speech skills. Handouts, forms and checklists will be included.

DSIG Virtual Conferences

DSIG Virtual Conferences

DSIG will be teaming up with DSA of Delaware and Chesapeake Down Syndrome Parent Group to present two virtual conferences for our families. The first virtual conference will be held on Saturday, 1/23/2021, from 2pm-4pm, featuring Dr. Brian Skotko. This virtual conference will appeal to families of all ages. His webinar will be covering two topics, “Brain Train: Smart Actions That Might Boost Cognition and Prevent Alzheimer’s Disease in People with Down Syndrome” and “Keeping Children and Adolescents with Down Syndrome Healthy: All the Medical Updates that Parents Need to Know”. Please see the attached conference brochure for more details. There will be no fee to attend this conference as DSIG will be absorbing all costs for participants.

The second virtual conference will take place on Thursday, 3/4/2021, at 7pm, featuring Stacy Taylor, a behavior analyst, and is entitled “Toilet Training Tips & Tricks”. DSIG will be absorbing the cost of this virtual 1.5 hr. webinar. On Friday, 3/5/2021 and Saturday, 3/6/2021, there will be time slots for virtual 1-hour, One-on-One Behavioral Consults with Stacy Taylor and her team to address any toilet training focused or otherwise general behavior concerns you may have. These 1:1 sessions could be for any age for any concerning behavior your child, young adult or adult with Down syndrome is experiencing. The cost of each session is $100/hr., so DSIG is asking that each family who is interested in the 1:1 sessions, pay the $100 when they sign up for the session to secure your spot, and once you attend the session, DSIG will refund you $75 of the money that you paid for the session. Of course, if this would be a hardship for anyone who would like to attend, please let Patty know.

Here is the sign up link for the 1:1 sessions. Please enter your name, email, and which DSA you are with.

Happy World Down Syndrome Month!
Mar 21 all-day

3.21 IS WORLD DOWN SYNDROME DAY

To celebrate World Down Syndrome Day (3/21) the Delaware County Down Syndrome Interest Group is hosting a fundraiser with the chance to own a beautiful tumbler, pictured below. The 20 oz. black tumbler features a three arrow design which is symbolic in the Down syndrome community. It represents the three copies of the 21st chromosome that occur in Down syndrome. An arrow must first be pulled back in order to expel forward. While the initial diagnosis may cause a “pull-back” thanks to support, community and love your arrow will quickly be sprung forward to amazing heights! This quote is meaningful to the lucky few that get to experience life with a family member or loved one who has DS.

$15 per tumbler = black with silver decoration
Details about the fundraiser:

$15 per tumbler
Colors: Black tumbler with a choice of silver arrows (pictured above), Black tumbler with DS yellow and blue arrows

Two options for receiving your tumbler:
pick-up at a local Delco locations (time and places TBD), shipping (shipping cost will be added to final price).

This fundraiser will run throughout the month of March.

If you would like to order a tumbler, please complete the order form by clicking the link below.

🌸🌷🌼

Please join us on Wednesday, April 20th from 6 to 9PM at Paxon Hollow Country Club for a Spring Fling event. This event will be held with no restrictions regarding masking or vaccination status.

Please RSVP to Megan Califano, [email protected], by Wednesday, April 13th. Please provide your family name, number of adults, number of kids (12 and under) and any dietary restrictions. Please note: we will try to accommodate these dietary requests, but all may not be possible.

RSVP NOW

As in years past, we ask that you RSVP responsibly. With the rising costs of these events we are introducing a new policy where you will be charged should you RSVP and not show up for the event. We understand emergencies and other situations occur however, the organization can no longer absorb the cost of these events when people are a no show. For this particular event, we ask that if there is a change to your RSVP that you notify us within 24 hours of the event. If we are not notified in the appropriate amount of time, you will be charged the amount that the organization was charged for your plate. You will be required to pay that before you will be allowed to attend any other DSIG events. We hope that you understand how hard it was for us to make this decision, but this is our way of trying to keep all of our events free of charge for our families. We appreciate your understanding and thank you for your support in this matter.

Additionally, we will be collecting annual dues at this event, dues have not changed as we are still only charging $10 per family. As a reminder, this is a nominal commitment for your support of our organization.

We hope to see you on the 20th!
