“This award is given to the individual who most personifies the attributes of courage and perseverance, has overcome their disability, and succeeded in their sport to the best of their ability.
Nicholas began competing in swimming for Special Olympics at 8 years of age. He has won many medals over the years in several events.
He has competed at the Penn State Summer Games and took first place in the 50 Freestyle. His favorite event is the 100 individual medley. He later competed at Ridley High School and scored points for the Green Raiders’ team.
Nick played floor hockey for three seasons, earning a number of gold, silver, and bronze medals. Nick was also a member of the Delaware County Special Olympics softball team. At the age of 14, he began competing in volleyball. He worked his way up to the number one team for Delaware County, earning a number of medals at the Villanova Games and other competitions.
Earlier this year, Nick began weightlifting, but a broken elbow kept him out of competition. He plans to get back to lifting in the fall.
Over the years, Nick has collected hundreds of medals and ribbons from Special Olympics, but more importantly, he has learned how to play on a team and has made life-long friends from competing.
Nick holds three jobs and continues to look for more job opportunities and expand his duties. His future goals are to continue swimming and weightlifting.”
